Featuring portraits of Ethiopian weavers by Xiomara Bender

The ABURY Foundation photo exhibition “PortrAid – Get art. Give work.” opens on February 14, 2018 in DRIVE. Volkswagen Group Forum. The exhibition features 38 photographs of weavers in Ethiopia. Proceeds from selling the photographs will be used by the organization to purchase new looms through PortrAid and improve the living situation for craftspeople and their families. The photographs were shot by national/international award-winning photo artist Xiomara Bender. After the preview on February 13, the exhibition is open to the public from February 14 until March 7, 2018 and is linked to the Volkswagen Group SHIFT sustainability exhibition. Admission is free.

“Our concept focuses on people and the direct relationship between those who need support and those who purchase the images,” project initiator Andrea Bury explains. “This sets us apart from many projects. With PortrAid, we know exactly who gets what and how much was paid. This level of transparency is very important to us,” adds co-founder Thomas Rusch. “With her unmistakable imagery, the photos by Xiomara Bender make a lasting impression, without being obtrusive. They call for a stance without being overbearing.”

For example, a loom helped 28-year-old Tesfaw Abe from Addis Ababa improve his weaving skills. Now he wants to learn embroidery. The same applies to Ashenaf Dimaro, who above all wants to be a good role model for his children. Those interested can purchase the photos directly in DRIVE or from the portraid.org website. Prices range from €590 to €2,500.

The photo exhibition “PortrAid – Get art. Give work” builds on the success of past projects “I see you see” (2015) and “I see you learn” (2016) supported by photographer and initiator Thomas Rusch. The project in 2015 helped people suffering from cataracts. In 2016, the project helped children from the Moroccan mountains receive two additional years of classroom education.

PortrAid

PortrAid is a project launched in 2015 by the ABURY Foundation and photographer Thomas Rusch. The ABURY Foundation was established in 2011 by Andrea Bury with a mission to preserve cultural diversity, promote intercultural exchange, and support educational projects. PortrAid offers a platform with a simple concept: use photography to illustrate problems artistically. The proceeds from the sale of a work of art directly benefit the person appearing in the photograph. PortAid connects the cause, photographers, and people with one click. The idea is to contribute to an inclusive world in which everyone has access to education and health. PortrAid is committed to supporting the United Nations social development goals.

Xiomara Bender

Photographer Xiomara Bender has won a number of awards, including the C/O Berlin Foundation “Close Up!” Prize, the Fine Art Photography Award in London, and the DDP Dialogue Marketing Award in Bronze. She also received an audience award on behalf of Lufthansa with a project called “The Unbelievable Journey of Xiomara Bender”. Her photo book “North Korea: The Power of Dreams” published by the renowned Kehrer publishing house in 2016 won the German Photo Book Award 2018 in silver.
