»TÜRKIYELI –
Contemporary Photography from Turkey«

Emine Akbaba, Kemal Aslan, Kürşat Bayhan, Göksu Baysal,
Barbaros Kayan, Emin Özmen, Ceren Saner & Collective NARphotos

Photography has been growing steadily in the cultural and media landscape of Turkey since the 1950s. The upcoming, modern photography from Turkey is nevertheless hardly known inside and outside its own country. Faced with wars and unrest in the Middle East as well as with the national developments, a generation of independent photographers has emerged. They closely observe societal changes in their homeland and document national and international events from their point of view.

Aesthetically and thematically, these young photographers mark a leap in Turkey’s history of photography. One of the outstanding characteristics of their generation is the multifaceted nature of their forms of expression and their ability to develop, in addition to visual and narrative strategies of photojournalism, their own conceptual visual languages.

With photographs by: Emine Akbaba, Kemal Aslan, Kürsat Bayhan, Göksu Baysal, Barbaros Kayan, Emin Özmen, Ceren Saner and the Collective NARphotos.

Curated by Attila Durak (Artistic Director FotoIstanbul), Katharina Mouratidi (Artistic Director GfHF) and Gisela Kayser (Artistic Director Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus).
