The Berlin based artist Kurt Buchwald plays with the light, clipping and disappearing. His studio is comparable to an observatory, his apparatus are a tube – a box. With a performative gesture, he controls the incidence of light and generates a photographic image. What is this? asks the viewer, who looks into the emptiness of the room. The confusion is great. In 1994, Buchwald founded the Office of Perceptual Disorder. The orders of this authority were a fake. What is illusion, what is reality? The so called image deflector attaches black, red and blue plates in front of the camera, which masks the view. The viewer has to complete the missing parts. With the series In the Circle of Perception he reverses the masking. The object becomes an barricade at the boundary of the perceptible. The series In the Box was created 2012 on occasion of an pleinair session: Modernity after Modernism. Body fragments of the participating artists were mounted to a constructed sculpture. For the opening reception of this re-performance the Office of Perceptual Disorder will measure the depth of the images.
