Photographs by André Lang
There are times when the hands of the clock turn faster, when events come thick and fast, and when past, present and future seem to meet at the same point. Sometimes the significance of such a moment can only be assessed when it has passed and become part of history.
These pictures, taken by the photographer André Lang and shown here for the first time, bear witness to this transition period. His selection includes urban environments, pedestrian portraits and everyday scenes imbued with atmosphere – authentic traces of history and fragments of the time between 1989 and 1999.
André Lang uses his camera as a seismograph and collection box. He documents upheavals in all spheres of life. His pictures convey an authentic impression of the atmosphere that dominated the years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He sees his photographs as contemporary notes and a visual commentary on the events of the time. His sensitivity to form and his analytic gaze make his work both a personal and more general documentation of contemporary history.
André Lang was born in Leipzig and studied graphic design and photography in Berlin and Potsdam.
