tunnel19, a Berlin based group of photographers, presents the seven parts of the exhibition series »Genius Loci«.
Genius Loci or “spirit of place” was an ancient Roman expression for a guardian spirit that defined a place’s idiosyncrasies, aura and atmosphere. Today, its definition is based less on mythology and more on the defining characteristics of historical and cultural layers, sometimes planned and thought through, but mostly chaotic and accidental. In the works of Berlin-based artistic group tunnel19, the various forms and states a genius loci can take on become visible in a new way, from our immediate personal home to urban scenarios in Berlin to characteristic architectural situations in the Berlin countryside. The group’s very different visual languages, concepts and modes of presentation encourage visitors to develop new insights and to recontextualize the familiar.
