Migration is the topic currently dominating all media sectors. It is, how Photonews wrote in February 2016, „an epic and very photogenic subject“. Photographers, agencies and media have wide influence over the representation of migration and, therefore, an increasingly high level of responsibility. Together with guests from agencies and picture desks, Ostkreuz photographers discuss photographic representation of migration and how media are dealing with it.
The event follows the steps from the creation of the images on site via the distribution channels to the final selection by the editors. The different protagonists involved are united in their concern to figuratively represent migration. However, tensions arise where intentions collide – and they can be quite different for photographers, photo agencies and editorial offices. But at the end of the process, don’t all parties pursue the same objectives?
The Ostkreuz – Verein für Fotografie e.V. was initiated by the photographers of the Ostkreuz Agency and is committed to the visualization of artistic and documentary photography. Current issues of the medium are made the subject of various public talks in order to encourage the exchange on contemporary photography and to promote the debate on its conditions.
